Tennessee doesn't license radon mitigators, so credentials matter more

Tennessee does not issue a state radon measurement or mitigation license. That is the state's own program talking, not a loophole we hide. Anyone with a truck can say they "do radon." Credentials are how you tell a pressure-field job from a bathroom fan in a crawl vent.

What Tennessee does not license

TDEC's radon program points homeowners to national credentials instead of a state card. There is no Tennessee radon contractor license to hang on the van. There is no state roster that proves the person who showed up passed a mitigation exam.

That is why "licensed in Tennessee" on a radon bid is either confused or advertising a general contractor license that is not a radon credential. Ask which exam they sat, NRPP or NRSB, and whether the listing is current.

Verify NRPP or NRSB in the public database

NRPP (National Radon Proficiency Program) and NRSB (National Radon Safety Board) keep public directories. A real mitigator can give you a name and a certification ID you can search.

Do this:

1. Get the certification ID and the name on the credential.
2. Search the NRPP or NRSB directory yourself. Do not stop at a logo on a truck.
3. Check that the listing is for mitigation, not only measurement, if they are quoting a system.
4. Ask who will be on the job. A directory listing for someone in another county does not cover a helper you never heard of.

What a good quote includes

A number without a foundation is a guess. A quote worth comparing should say:

• Crawl, slab, basement, or split, and what that means for this house
• Fan, piping, sealing, and where the exhaust lands
• Electrical, including whether a new circuit is in the price
• A visible manometer and a system label
• A post-mitigation test after the house settles
• What happens if the first retest is still high
• The certification ID you can verify
